One Threw Four (2011)

sax. quartet

Program Notes
One Through Four explores the similarity and dissimilarity between the soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones. All four saxophones have somewhat distinct timbres, but the most distinguishing feature is the differences in range. This work plays with the idea of indiscerniblity; that is, whether or not the listener can tell which saxophone is playing any given part at any given time. Some textures get so dense that hearing individual lines becomes difficult; at other moments, certain lines project clearly through the prevailing texture even when other lines may remain difficult to perceive.
