Commercial advertisements saturate the popular presentation mediums of art, often times getting in the way of our appreciation of said art. They are annoying and distracting. Commercials take you out of the artistic experience, diluting the meaning and weight of everything that preceded them. This is why it is so easy to change the channel when commercials come on. And perhaps the most insulting and irritating thing about them is when they appear just before the most important moment of a work. This happens frequently with television, and on Spotify if one does not purchase the ad-free upgrade – for instance, the space between movements three and four of Beethoven’s 5th can be interrupted by an ad for a new album. It is only a matter of time until ad space is purchased in the middle of a work. The future is here!
