Program Notes
Labyrinthitis was written in response to my brief hospitalization at the end of December 2011. Labyrinthitis is an inner ear infection that affects the Vestibular system resulting in loss of balance. For weeks I experienced extreme and unrelenting dizziness; the whole experience was more annoying and nauseating than anything else. I spent two nights in the hospital trying to figure out what was wrong – thus the other major component of the work is the sound of beeping.
While in the hospital, I came to realize the subtlety of beeps. It is such a simple sound and yet by changing certain parameters only slightly (rate of beeping, frequency, timbre, context, etc.) the entire meaning of the beep is changed.
This piece is not trying to be any kind of programmatic retelling of what I went through; rather it was just inspired by the experience.
