Deported (2017)

Any ensemble of 10+ performers

Variable duration

Program Notes
With all the talk of ‘walls’ and ‘enforcing the laws’ these days, Deported makes dreams come true, the consequences be damned. This work is a reaction against President Donald Trump’s “Immigration Ban” executive order, officially titled, “Executive Order: Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States,” initially issued on January 27, 2017 and updated on March 6, 2017. Before performance, certain performers are deemed “banned,” and are not allowed to perform. Authorities are enforcing the law and checking for papers, so any musicians who should not be on stage will be deported. These “banned” musicians have the opportunity to evade authorities, self-deport, or resist in other creative ways. Watch and enjoy as the laws of this piece are enforced and illegal performers are removed from their instrumental families.
